how do you safely blow out your hair?

in HAIR CARE Q&A

i’ve mastered blowing out my hair. have you?

when i’m in the mood for straight hair, i know it’s time to sit on the floor of my bedroom, with a fan at my back and and some good music playing. the fan? i use it to combat any sweating i might incur in my scalp – if it’s summer time.

i always blow my hair out in four sections. before i start, after co-washing, i rinse all of the conditioner out of my hair (i normally leave some – about 20%) and then i apply a watery leave-in conditioner in the shower, this sally’s generic infusium 23 to be exact, and then i apply my heat protectant, silk elements megasilk olive heat protection.

i apply my heat protectant VERY liberally because it’s so light, you can almost not add too much. it comes out in a very light mist so you don’t have to worry about having too much in each pump.

i use a conair pro yellow bird 1875 watt hair dryer to dry my hair.

this hair dryer is AWESOME. the wattage is professional grade and to be honest, you have to be careful, because it can get HOTTT! some dominican salons use this brand for their blow outs. and if you know anything about dominican salons, they use great blowdryers!

it dries my hair in no time flat. i cannot recommend this conair pro yellow bird 1875 watt hair dryer enough.

if you’ve been looking for a holy grail blow dryer then i really suggest you give this dryer a try. i’m on my second one. i used my first one for years before it just died on me. that’s how much i love this thing – i was using it a lot back then – i talk about how i used a lot of heat on my hair in my hair story. now, i only use it a few times a year, BUT, like a good flatiron, the $25 investment is worth it when it comes to this hair dryer. oh, and it also comes with a carrying case.

i use the diffuser attachment to blow my hair dry – i rarely use the comb.

i dry my hair by spraying a section really well with heat protectant, pulling it taunt with one hand and then running the blow dryer on med heat up and down that section – on the top and under side – until it dries. i detangle in the shower, but sometimes will run my jilbere shower comb through the damp section, before i blow it out, once again just to make sure i don’t have any tangles.

i’ve been blowing my hair dry like this for the last few years and it has made a world of difference.

some naturals call this the “tension” blow dry method. whatever you want to call it, it works very well for kinky hair because you don’t have to worry about ripping out your hair with the comb attachment AND it helps to get your hair just as straight.

so how do you safely blow out your hair? do you use the tension method? how often do you blow out your hair? what heat protectant do you use?
