in HAIR CARE Q&A

long before i knew anything – and i mean anything – about healthy hair, i used to love my satin and *gasp* COTTON (yes, blasphemy i know!) scarves.

the cotton was just wrong, wrong, wrong; but i thought i was doing a better job with satin. um, kinda, but not the BEST job i could be doing.

cotton is not good for a sleeping or wrapping scarf because it’s hard on the tresses. and most cotton scarves are weaved looser so that your hairs can get caught in the scarf and the scarf will, over time, pull your hair out – this is a no-no especially for women who have trouble retaining their edges and napes.

satin vs silk is another issue all together, so lets start with the facts.

fact: 99% of the time, satin is not real – it’s fake.
fact: silk is real.

there is no such thing as a satin plant; there are however SILK worms and COTTON plants.

satin is a type of WEAVE/TREATMENT done to a fabric. satin USED to be made from silk – meaning silk was treated to have a high shine on one side, but satin can be made with a number of different fibers – polyester, silk, even rayon. most often, stain is made from polyester. bought a scarf recently? read the tag. i’d bet money that it’s 100% polyester (a synthetic/man made blend of fibers).

the reason silk is better for you than satin is because the weave of silk is tighter and you have little to no risk of your hair being caught in the weave, the fabric does not peel (get those little balls that you have to pull off) over time and it will always be soft unlike satin scarves which loose their softness with time, and is not harsh on your nape and edges. lastly, silk allows your scalp to breath — a key here.

if you are using a satin scarf, more likely than not it’s polyester and polyester is an almost breathless material — meaning air does not circulate well thorough the weaves. silk is the better choice because even with it’s tight weave, air circulates better and if you sweat in your scalp at night, silk will help to keep your head cool.

so if you are using a satin scarf, ditch it and upgrade to silk. it’s just as affordable, so get on it!

silk scarves usually cost a tad bit more – though they won’t break the bank if you are looking for a basic head scarf.

i like to get my silk scarves from amazon.com. they are cheap and i can buy a couple at a time without feeling purse pain!

and of course if you don’t wrap, a silk pillowcase will suffice just as well. i like the spasilk 100% pure silk pillowcase because it’s only $15 and works just as well as a scarf.

do you wrap your head in silk or satin? or maybe you don’t wrap at all?
