i picked this bar of soap up from the vitamin shoppe in hopes that it would give my hair and scalp a good cleansing. so many naturals rave and rave and rave about castile soap that i thought it was about time that i gave this soap a chance to work with my kinky, coils.
i used this last night and boy let me tell you…
SUPER STRIPPED AND DRY HAIR! NO BUENO!
as soon as this bar started to suds up, my hair started to lock down like a thirsty engine in a ’67 chevy. and my hair strands started moving past each other slower and slower as i tried to work this throughout my hair. my hair started to feel stripped and came to a screeching halt like rusty train tracks. i could just feel the oils being abducted from my strands. *shudders at thought*
i immediately had to rinse this out of my hair and plaster on some aussi moist conditioner. again i say, no bueno.
i decided to get the bar vs the liquid because…well, just because.
all liquid and bar soap ingredients (less the peppermint essential oil or whatever scent you get; i.e. lavender)
Water, Saponified Organic Coconut*, Organic Palm* and Organic Olive* Oils (w/Retained Glycerin), Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Essential Oils**, Citric Acid, Vitamin E
for now for hair washing, i give this bar a 0/5, but for body use, i say 3.5/5 for the tingly peppermint feeling, organic ingredients, and clean smell. i cannot give it 5/5 because of the price – about $4 for one bar! and the fact that this is just not very moisturizing for kinky 4a/b hair like mine.
castile soap is pretty strong and can also be used to clean your house – an all purpose cleaner that is also gentle enough to use on the body. i like that, i just do not like this product for hair washing AT ALL.
i will be using it again shortly and will do another review. this time i will dilute it with water and some coconut and olive oil for washing and see how that goes because for some reason, i really want this product to work for me since i don’t like regular shampoos.
click on either the bar of soap or photo to learn more about the infamous dr. bronners’ castile soap.
but what say you? are you a dr. bronners’ castile soap fan? how do you use this product?

I used to use it to wash my locs and some of the other uses. I would brush my teeth with it, clean the tub, use it for massage, and also to wash clothes.
I really liked it. I stopped using it and started using the Trader Joes version of it. I still use it to wash my TWA sometimes.
I make soap, including liquid soap. (In fact, I've a batch resting right now.) A few facts:
1. Dr. B's is not real Castile soap. True Castile soap is nothing but 100% olive oil turned into soap.
2. It contains coconut oil, which can be rather drying when made into soap.
3. It's perfectly clear, which is an important sign. Clear soaps don't have much in the way of extra oil to moisturize your skin. If the soap is transparent, and doesn't contain polysorbate 20 or sulfated castor oil, it has no extra oil to help your skin retain moisture.
Keep those in mind when choosing products for hair or skin.
I really like Dr. B however I have only used this soap(sometimes black soap) and shea butter on my skin for the past 8mos and OMG my skin is starting to itch like crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!! I slather all this shea butter on my skin and it looks shiny but underneath its dry! Has anyone else had this issue?
This article made me laugh because I made the mistake of buying this product the other day, thinking that I was about to do a lil somethin’, somethin’ special to my coils and surely enough it started to dry out. There are so many freaking words on the bottle that I missed the whole dilute thing. Needless to say, as I felt my hair start to dry up…I mildly panicked and started adding my Elasta QP conditioner. My hair felt clean and had some of the best curls, but I did condition thoroughly afterwards.
Should have sat down and read the braille on the bottle. I will for sure use the product again, but now I know from the comments on how to make this stuff work.
I love how natural try new products.
I LOVE this soap! I usually just add a FEW drops of the liquid peppermint to a spray bottle of water. I only wash with the soap every few weeks and I follow it with a DC so dryness isn’t really an issue.
