some people have it naturally – thick hair. hair so thick that they often have to thin it with thinning shears. and a lot of us do not. and i too don’t have thick hair so this is a question i can really relate to.
i would say my hair is on the normal density end, or maybe less. as a matter of fact, when i press my hair out it looks thinner. when i was relaxed, the worst part to me was that i didn’t have much hair – that my hair was not very dense.
i’ve found that using butters on my hair when styling helps because it adds some weight to the hair and helps natural hair to clump together. what i like to do with my hair is also style it while it’s wet as that helps my strands to stick closer together. once my hair is about 4-5 days old, i loose my curl and it starts to hang longer thus making my hair look thinner. the more “compact” my hair is, the thicker it looks.
but at times that’s a catch 22 because i don’t always want hair that’s not optimally stretched. so, to combat that i will co-wash my hair, braid or twist while wet and then add flex rollers. with this style i get a tight compacted, but lush and full curly fro.
after washing, use shea moisture curl and shine conditioning milk to help your curls “clump”, twist your hair and then roll them up with flexi rollers and add a bit of olive oil for shine when you get ready to separate your curls. once you have separated your hair, finish it off by spraying it with shea moisture moisture mist.

how excited was i when i ran across this tutorial by african export of my favorite go-to style??!! she shows you exactly how to get this style with the quickness. letting your twists stay for as long as possible often always yields the most optimal results.
what say you? what do you do to make your natural hair look thicker?

When I do twist outs but want my hair to look thick, I do them on wet hair and then take them out before my hair totally dries: about 75%-90% dry (give or take, depending on if I’m rushing or not).
Because my hair is still slightly wet, it allows it to expand, getting ride of piece-y-ness.
Because you do this before your hair is dry, you’ll probably have some frizziness, (but I like my frizzies, so it does not bother me), but it isn’t as bad if you make sure to touch it as little as possible.
***Do not bother separating, when it fluffs up it expands enough on its own.
love that look!
Simply beautiful. You have very pretty hair. Thanks for being so detailed.
i love this….thanks for sharing
I twisted my hair last Friday and just took it out this Thursday, it looked super full (my hair is very fine as well). Plus the humidity made it poof out more which I was very happy about. Today I have big a$$ hair!
