September 2011

i’ve been slowing coming down off of my high and i’m no longer a fan of traditional deep conditioning – 20 mins or more. if i can be completely honest with you, i’ve never really felt it did much for my kinky natural hair. don’t get me wrong, i actually love the idea of deep conditioning. you know, plastering my hair with a thick custard like cream that is rich in oils, butters and emollients that claim to put the pep in my hair step. but once i do it, after all the conditioner is washed out and i step out of the shower to stand in front of my bathroom mirror, face soaked, hair shrunken and dripping wet, and i’m left feeling blasé; not overly impressed because my hair really feels no different than it would had i used a regular wash out conditioner. it’s like when you find some cute shoes at the shoe department in macy’s and you get all geeked to try them on but after you get them in your size from the sales associate they look not so cute on your feet? the idea of the shoe was great, but the actual implementation left you wanting more? that’s how i feel about deep conditioning. yet, i still did it a few times every couple months.

recently, it’s been revealed, thanks to celeste, that deep conditioning is [click to continue…]

one of our favorite curly haired mavens, tracee ellis ross, is gracing the cover of jet magazine’s october 10th issue. in the issue she talks about her upcoming tv show with malcolm jamal warner and touches on her hair. her big, bossy and fly hair – the hair that we all love and secretly covet, even if just a little bit. tracee didn’t have much to say about her hair, but what she did say was spot on and resonated with me. i could so relate, so tracee, you and i are >here<, honey. i have an aunt that cannot pronounce “strawberry” for the life of her. her version of strawberry is skrawberry. as much as my cousins and i try to get her to sound it out, the end result is always skrwaberry and we always end up bursting into fits of laughter. bless her heart.

besides my aunt’s take on strawberries, i’m quite fond of the word and the fruit and have found a way to use them on my natural hair and skin. as a hair mask, strawberries and cream are a great at home spa treatment and for the skin, you can use them as both a mask and scrub and trust me when i say you are going to smell like a berry patch! if you’ve got a few minutes on your hands and feel like dancing you can also jam to skrawberries a la lil mama and bounce around in your flyest get up while you treat your hair and face. and peep the little natural bella in the video too. she’s got major kiddo natural hair game. I have never paid a photographer for pictures for my book. I do know other models that have had to dish out money they don’t have to get photos, but I think it’s unnecessary.

Lately, there’s been a lot of talk on Twitter about what makes a “real model”. I’m sure you’ve seen the girls who post scantily-clad photos of themselves in suggestive positions saying that they are models. And these same culprits talk about all the “modeling” they’ve been doing, but it just doesn’t sound or look legit. I’m not going to throw any punches, but I am here to offer some insight. If you want to be something, you’ve got to talk the talk and walk the walk. Dress and act the part, if you know what I mean. Without further ado, here’s the question: “Do real models have to pay for their own photo shoots?”

This one is a little tricky. When you’re just starting out as a model, you may have to [click to continue…]
