“Since we are talking about hair smells and hair products, I would like to know what products you use for pressing your hair that smell the best. I love that sugar hair spray recommendation and use that sometimes (thank you), so I was hoping you could lead me in the best direction for a good smelling heat protectant that does not cost a lot.” – Aniyah (not pictured)

yes, good smelling hair is important. and often the biggest goliath to fight when seeking out soothing hair aromas is heat. heat will literally burn the smell out of your hair even if your hair is not burned. it’s just that whole cooking thing that you have to get around.

but, since we know that and you are looking for something good smelling that you can pick up today even if you wanted to, then i think sticking with the classic smell that many men love and can almost recount by name is your best bet so i recommend [click to continue…]

is it just me, or is it clear as day? i think with the obvious steady trickle of cleaning conditioners hitting the market we should soon expect a flood. i anticipate many more of these “wen” type products coming out for the masses soon. but i think we should also point out an obvious, VERY OBVIOUS, inspiration for all this conditioner shampoo stuff – curly hair boards and curly haired women “discovering” that washing their hair with conditioner cuts down on knots, tangles and breakage, some of the things that many curly hair women – including myself – experience when using shampoo both with and without sulfates.

wen brought conditioner washing to home shopping tv and into the lives of women all over america and l’oreal is following suit with their new l’oreal evercreme cleansing conditioner. sulfate free, it’s a conditioner shampoo that calls for nothing before and after use – just wash and go.

nope, it’s not [click to continue…]

every time i press my natural hair, i go out of my way to make sure that my hair smells good. after washing and conditioning, like you, i’m left with subtly fragranced locks. however, the smell is short lived because as soon as that heat protecant hits my hair and the flaming guns come out in the form of a blow dryer and flat iron, all of my hair aroma is lost; overpowered by the smell of heat – you know the smell i’m talking about.

since carol’s daughter introduced their chocolat line, i no longer have that problem. talk about a product that gets the issue of “heat smell” and makes it completely a NON-ISSUE. if you want to talk about good smelling hair, ALLLL during washing, conditioning, adding heat protectant, blowing out and pressing? well then you’ve got to be on to this chocolat thing that carol’s daughter has going on. [check it out here] but enough about that..

even if i don’t use carol’s daughter when pressing, i’ll always finish my hair of with [click to continue…]

coral is a hot color for spring and ever since chanel iman graced the cover of l’official magazine with her beautiful matte coral lips, women have been scrambling to get their hands on the lip magic.

i’m a big fan, so much so that i was one of those women scouring the drug store, grocery store and any beauty counter i could find. it was a trip, let me tell you because what looked good in the tube often looked awful on me. i realized that for my black skin i needed to go warm – just as i do with my reds and though i love the pastel look, there is an art to picking out the right coral so that you don’t look like you just step out of a cirque du solie performance. i also found four great shades that are close to the chanel iman look so pick up any of these tubes below if you are crazy for coraline too!

so first up we have the balms/glosses and double duties for you ladies who prefer something lighter than a traditional lipstick. [click to continue…]

so here i am, holding tight to my words to share a bit more of my world and what better way to kick this off than talking about one of my favorite subjects – shoes! i’ve been living between l.a. and n.y. for the last month; i sit in bed in brooklyn as i type this, and because i’ve been doing SO much traveling, i’ve found myself in need of new outfits constantly. during #nyfw i attended the rock and republic/kohl’s show, which i loved by the way – and i wanted to show up and show out. anything with “rock” in the title calls for an edgy and chic outfit, no? so i had to pull out the big guns which came in the form of these bawse and uber affordable, crystal studded booties. Why and when did you make the decision to go natural?

Well I originally did the big chop back in May of 2007 but I put a texturizer in my hair. I went back to perms after I ruined the texture of my hair by putting a hot comb to it a year later. I decided to start all over again in the summer of 2010 when I became sick and tired of maintaining my short “Rihanna/Halle Berry” cut while working out. It became far too annoying to maintain a style like that and sweating all the time, so I decided to grow out my hair. I wanted to [click to continue…]
