Whilst waiting at the bus stop on a cold raining night, minding my own business praying my preferred mode of transport would arrive already, that is when it happened when I spotted the most amazing Afro, atop a
picturesque face mounted on a model figure…little did I know I had just been Julia Sarr Jamois.
Julia Sarr Jamois is the effortlessly cool editor of Wonderland Magazine, the 23 year old is a regular at fashion week, often shot by street style bloggers, Stylist and sometime model.
The London based fashionista rocks a curly fro, that she insists she has worn this way since the age of fourteen, the low maintenance style icon uses very little products in her hair, telling vogue.com: [click to continue…]
Lets go back, way back….well to 1967, when a curly haired, soon-to-be supermodel in the making was spotted by Vogue in New York City. Pat Cleveland went on the reinvent the runway walk with her signature strut, extreme poses and amazing curls. She ruled the roost throughout the 1970′s after making a name for herself in Paris and inspiring mega designers such as Holston & YSL.
One of the First models of colour to gain world wide recoginistion, Cleveland worked with Valentino and Oscar de la Renta and had fans that spanned from the Beatles to Josephine Baker who Cleveland also happens to resemble. [click to continue…]
If it’s not obvious already, around here, we can’t get enough to wax fabric. If you’ve been following along, Ciaa has already began to break down the ins and outs of the various types of African fabrics (with much more to come!). I continue to be a big fan of Batik so I just had to add my two cents about my love of this waxed-out magical variety in fabric.
Since the runway shows last fall, the spring and summer trends are starting to filter their way in trend reports all over the web. As one of the key ‘trends’ to be picked up by the fash pack, Batik is considered ‘afro-centric’, though I’m uneasy with the term afro-centric and can’t help but feel the fashion industry is replicating a style that African designers have been doing for years. However, if it does nothing but shed light on the versatility of Batik and African print it could possibly be a good thing. [click to continue…]
I’ve had my eye on Herieth Paul for a while now, ever since the 16 year old dazzled on a shoot for Canadian Elle wearing an afro wig. The Tanzanian born model, now relocated to Canada, has been on model1′s books since the tender age of 14. In the last year she has shot for Italian Vogue and snagged major campaigns for Diesel, CK One and Lacoste. Paul has recently been signed to Women Management. [click to continue…]
In 2010, a little known Parisian model entered a world wide on-line casting for a big name brand. Created by Benneton, the IT’S MY TIME campaign, was the first of it’s kind. Every season, the brand hosted a model search to head up their new campaign giving lesser known and novice models a chance to [...]
This weeks Kinks on Behind the Catwalk looks closely at the gorgeous curls behind the Catwalk one of our favourites designers, London born, Carly Cushnie. Swedish model Sabina Karlsson hit the big time when she took part in Scandinavia’s next top model. From there the beautiful, red-haired, freckeled-face Swedish model went on to own the 2008 spring summer runway walking for Betsey Johnson, Cynthia Steffe, Heatherette, and Tracy Reese. Her walk was noticeable as her unique look stole the show [...]
I almost died of happiness on seeing the stunning Nur Hellmann walking for Sass & Bide spring 2012 collection at London Fashion Week, firstly because I always get excited when I see a “Kink On The Catwalk” in any capacity, and secondly because the German born model was so proudly sporting undefined, kinky-textured natural hair.
