Short hair isn’t something most women dream of having. When I went natural, I’d hoped that my hair would grow to be a big curly mane. I wanted hair so huge that you wouldn’t be able to sit behind me in a movie theater. I wanted people to be able to spot my fro out of a crowd. I didn’t have any intentions of keep it cropped, but that soon changed. Now I can honestly say that I love my TWA.
Society would have us believe that in order to be feminine, long hair is a requirement. We’re taught this from a very young age. All of my dolls had long hair. The Hollywood stars that I envied had long hair too. So many of our beauty references are associated with this idea. If that weren’t true, many women wouldn’t stock up on wigs and extensions. Just think about some of your own natural hair icons. How many of them actually have short hair?
Well, I’m here to tell you that [click to continue…]
Hello lovelies! It’s your Fairy Model Mother here. We’ve been super busy at the KISFORKINKY hairquarters working on some new features that we’ll be rolling out shortly, but never too busy for a little Q & A. Today’s question comes from a dedicated reader who’s a fan of the TWA. Pretty Young Thing says:
“While modeling and your counterparts have wind machines on their flowing hair, what’s your secret to conveying sexy sans a ton of hair movement?”
Let me tell you, I used to have huge hair envy. I would see those amazon-like models with long locks flipping their hair and I’d get jealous. You see them in commercials and ads all the time with that shiny, full of body hair. I even see natural hair models with waves or curls that ever so lightly brush their shoulders. I used to want that. I loved it when [click to continue…]

“Cuz baby whether you’re high or low. Whether you’re high or low… you gotta tip on the tightrope.”
When I’m getting ready to go out or I have an audition, I listen to music to get me hype. I don’t know about you, but a certain song always gets me going. For instance, when KISFORKINKY hosted the meet up a few weeks ago I asked the dj to play Vivrant Thing before I got on stage to speak. That jam and I have been together since college, and we’re still going strong. Now that’s my personal theme song, but my hair has a song all on her own.
I didn’t discover my hair melody until [click to continue…]

It’s here! It’s here! Fashion Week is in full swing with New York wrapping up their festivities and the fashion exposition moving overseas. Catwalk queens and fashionistas have taken over New York, London, and Paris. I get so excited around this time of year. Fashion Week is what dreams are made of. The collections we see on the runway inspire the way we dress, makeup trends, and definitely hair styles. But have you ever noticed the shortage of kinks and curls on the catwalk? It’s not that models with our hair type don’t exist. There’s a different reason altogether. This brings us to our question of the day:
“How is natural hair treated on the runway?”
A few years ago when I first went natural, I thought my bad hair fashion days were over. I figured that if I showed up to a shoot or a show with short natural hair, there’s no way a stylist could mess it up. Well, I was wrong. One particular show put me over the edge. The producers knew that I was natural and seemed [click to continue…]

Hello lovelies. It’s your Fairy Model Mother here broadcasting live from a photo shoot.
Ooo la la.
I get a lot of questions from aspiring models who want to know how to get their foot in the door. Since it’s the beginning of the year and we’re all starting anew, I figured a quick refresher is appropriate. Today’s question comes from kinky girl Jasmine who says:
“I wanted to know in your experience with modeling, what advice can you give for a young woman trying to get in the industry? What should be my first step?”
There’s not an exact science to getting started in this industry. Some models have been scouted in malls while others went to open calls. For me, after years of trying to get into the business, I was finally “discovered” in a coffee shop. It’s all about timing and persistence if you’re really serious about modeling.
First things first. Think about the [click to continue…]

Hello lovelies. Even though we’re a week and a half into it, I still cannot believe that we are in a new year. I don’t know about you, but I try to make reasonable New Year’s resolutions- things that I realistically can accomplish. This is the perfect time for you to set some goals for your modeling career. I get tons of questions from women looking to start or continue in their modeling career and what better time than now to start looking forward to making this new year one of the best. My most common recent question was:
“How can I be a better model in 2012?”
Every model needs to think of herself or himself not just as an artist, but also as a brand. I understand that you want to do what you love to do, but you’ve also got to [click to continue…]
