HAIR LUST

Ok, I’m gonna confess something to you:

I have been fake in my conversations…well, not in all conversations…just ones about my hair. (Wait! Wait! Keep reading!)

Over the 15 years of having long/locked hair, I have been asked every random question you could think of about my do:

“Is it real?” “Can I touch it?” “Do you wash it?” “Are you ever gonna cut it? If you do, can I have one?”

And with time, for most of these questions, I have sort of developed “stock responses”–tried and true statements to address anyone asking. And why? Well, it helps to have a prepackaged comeback to keep the conversation moving, or get me outta a longer unwanted chat. I’ve sorta grown bored with the same old questions about my hair, so sad to say, at times I “phone it in.”

This has backfired on me in the past though. A few years back, [click to continue…]

No wire hangers and NO natural hair, ever!!

Mother Knows Best, Or Does She?

Ah, Mother’s Day. It’s the day set aside to especially honor and celebrate our mothers and the influence they’ve had on our lives. A plethora of poems, a quantity of quotes, a trove of tributes will inundate the internet… enough to make you shed a tear, then roll your eyes. Tons of mushy gushy, lovey dovey, happy sappy mama moments… enough to make you gasp with emotion, then gag with exasperation. With that said, let’s do a bit of our own maternal monumentalization! But you know how we do… I mean, we Pick Fros and Pop Collars around this joint! So we gotta do it kinky style and acknowledge our natural hair, and our mamas, of course.

So, I started thinking back to that moment when I told my mom that I wanted to go natural. As my mother, I knew she would support me no matter what. But I also knew she would tell me her honest opinion. What I did not know, was that she was going to say something crazy! She said: [click to continue…]

If you are into the fine art of face painting, aka, makeup, then you are probably no stranger to Shu Uemura’s Cleaning Oil. It’s very popular among the crowds of women who love to clean their face with oils. But even if you are not, then you are probably well aware as a curly-haired woman that oils are beneficial to our hair, even when they come in our shampoos.

Released late last year, Shu Uemura Art For Hair Cleansing Oil Shampoo is a shampoo designed to wash the hair but not strip it of its natural oils.

Short hair isn’t something most women dream of having. When I went natural, I’d hoped that my hair would grow to be a big curly mane. I wanted hair so huge that you wouldn’t be able to sit behind me in a movie theater. I wanted people to be able to spot my fro out of a crowd. I didn’t have any intentions of keep it cropped, but that soon changed. Now I can honestly say that I love my TWA.

Society would have us believe that in order to be feminine, long hair is a requirement. We’re taught this from a very young age. All of my dolls had long hair. The Hollywood stars that I envied had long hair too. So many of our beauty references are associated with this idea. If that weren’t true, many women wouldn’t stock up on wigs and extensions. Just think about some of your own natural hair icons. How many of them actually have short hair?

Well, I’m here to tell you that [click to continue…]

we’ve all had that moment when someone says something to you that’s a bit awkward in regards to your natural hair. i, myself, have had my share of awkward moments when it comes to my natural hair, but i don’t believe that all compliments that come out chopped and screwed are meant as backhanded as many would like to believe and encourage; some just come out a little more than interesting seeing as hair is often inherently tied to race which well all know is always a sticky subject to broach.

jennifer, a KISFORKINKY reader, recently had a locker room encounter at her gym that she shares below. read on and share your thoughts at the end on what you would have done if this would have been you…that one time in the gym locker room…
