“My animals are my two bangle mix kitties but they fetch like dogs and steal my socks!” Kris of The Kris Bliss says as we talk on the phone. She says this with a laugh as we settle in for our interview. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Kris received two degrees in songwriting and music business. “I love going to concerts,” she says, “And watching old school movies like the Five Hear Beats and the Temptations.” As for her natural hair she has no regrets or apologies to dish out. “I saw it on TV of all places and that was that!”
KISFORKINKY: what brought you the world of natural? what’s your story?
KRIS: when i was in 10th grade, i saw all of these girls on t.v. with big natural hair. from that, i decided that i wanted to go natural so i told my mom and of course she tried to talk me out of it. this is coming from a woman who didn’t get her first perm until she was [click to continue…]

Freelance make-up artist Sisi Nike is the blogger behind My Modest Mouth. Through her blog, Sisi takes us into a journey about her natural hair, beauty and style and how she feels about being an African woman with natural hair.
Why and when did you make the decision to go natural?
Well I originally did the big chop back in May of 2007 but I put a texturizer in my hair. I went back to perms after I ruined the texture of my hair by putting a hot comb to it a year later. I decided to start all over again in the summer of 2010 when I became sick and tired of maintaining my short “Rihanna/Halle Berry” cut while working out. It became far too annoying to maintain a style like that and sweating all the time, so I decided to grow out my hair. I wanted to [click to continue…]

christmas is a wonderful time for many. once you make your way through tree decorating, egg nog comas and gift wrapping you are left with something magical that lies not in the tangible but all of in the things we cannot see. the sweet smells of candy, marshmallows and holiday cooking that we associate with the holidays, the warm feelings we get when we slip into a comfy sweater to go shopping with our family, the laughs shared over christmas breakfast. all of these things lend to our never ending stream of holiday memories that have the power to take us back to christmas anytime we want with just a close of our eyes and a tilt of our heads towards the heavens as we reminisce on the things that make us remember the holidays so strongly. with only a few days to go, kinky girls are recounting their memories in this month’s aphropic: unforgettable and cherished christmas memories. a chicago style blogger and digital account exec, Andrea is a no holds barred woman who has grown to discover that she really loves her hair and that she make no apologies for it.
andrea, your hair is so pretty! what’s the story with the hair?
i don’t know! [laughs] my mom has auburn colored and looser curl hair and my hair is nothing like hers. but my father…my grandmom, his mom, is hawaiian and philippina and my grandpa was polish so my dad has really very coarse hair. so i’d say it’s more of my father, but then my hair is blonde, so…
my parents actually thought [click to continue…]

ebony is a natural and she is truly proud. learning to love her natural hair after recovering from a few stumbling blocks; she went back to relaxing for a while when she couldn’t figure out exactly how to care for her natural hair, she feels like she finally gets it and that being natural is part of who she is and identifies with as a curly woman. she chops it up to show off her kinky side and share what makes her a kinky girl and how she rocks her natural so…naturally.
“Relaxing my hair was not an option anymore.
In the grand scheme of things, it just didn’t make sense.”
what’s the best part about having textured hair?
my favorite thing about having textured hair is that i can do whatever the heck i want with it. i can wear it kinky/curly if i want, twisted, straightened, etc. i absolutely love the versatility and the fact that if it rains i don’t really care. lol!
being a kinky and curly girl can be much more fun than a lot of people still believe. what influenced you to go au natural and step into the shoes of a curly woman? [click to continue…]

it’s halloween time and you know what that means. “trick or treat smell my feet!”, costumes and candy comatose for the little ones and you too if your are anything like me and go scavenging in candy bags for left over candy from the kiddos. bring on the sprees and banana laffy taffy. man, can you imagine if real banana tasted anything like banana candy?! people would be growing banana trees in their back yards.
in honor of cheap candy and sketchy hooker costumes (no really, why are all the costumes hooker versions of something? hooka’ nurse, hooka’ school teacher – hooka’ witch) i’m asking you curly bellas on twitter: WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST FEAR?
mine? well since i was laid out from strep a couple weeks ago that would have to be it. getting that again anytime soon. *shudders* talk about pain and the painful antibiotic shots and all the pills. not the bizness. this photo of me was taken the night before it all went downhill and i woke up with a slight scratchy throat that would knock me off of my feet hours later. hmmm, did my server at the melting pot have it and gave it to me through germs left on that martini glass? i’ll never know. *oh and p.s. i’m drinking sour patch kids martini (and wearing this red lipstick). that martini is the thunder!
