It’s here! It’s here! Fashion Week is in full swing with New York wrapping up their festivities and the fashion exposition moving overseas. Catwalk queens and fashionistas have taken over New York, London, and Paris. I get so excited around this time of year. Fashion Week is what dreams are made of. The collections we see on the runway inspire the way we dress, makeup trends, and definitely hair styles. But have you ever noticed the shortage of kinks and curls on the catwalk? It’s not that models with our hair type don’t exist. There’s a different reason altogether. This brings us to our question of the day:
“How is natural hair treated on the runway?”
A few years ago when I first went natural, I thought my bad hair fashion days were over. I figured that if I showed up to a shoot or a show with short natural hair, there’s no way a stylist could mess it up. Well, I was wrong. One particular show put me over the edge. The producers knew that I was natural and seemed [click to continue…]
“[Rock and Republic] formed a beautiful alliance with Kohl’s and now they are making their brand more accessible.” – Zoe Saldana
it’s true and zoe is right, the alliance has been formed and televised and today is the kickoff of the full collection being available online. as mentioned, the new rock and republic kohl’s aesthetic does not stray from from the original line – long, fit-to-flare leg jeans – one of their original staples back as far as 10 yeas ago when they started, cropped, colorful skinnies and lot of studs. what’s label based on rock without studs? on friday, i spent my evening, ok well, not the entire evening, but a little time with zoe saldana, heidi klum, ashley simpson and molly sims plus fabulous baby in utero in the blacked out, runway ready hammersham ballroom in manhattan. and what would you know? we all had one thing in common – yes, all of us. we were sitting front and center at the kohl’s rock and republic fashion show getting ready to give our eyes a fashion party.
was the show amazing? okay, nutella waffels are amazing, sunsets in the french rivera are amazing, fresh matte tea in south america is amazing, but i will say that this show did not disappoint and i definitely didn’t leave the ballroom feeling let down. my anticipation was fulfilled; so much so that i was hoping that a few more models would run out when it was over and that [click to continue…]
getting dressed every day is really a labor of love. you have to pick what to wear, analyze how it’s going to make you appear and feel confident walking out of the house. to make the transition a bit easier, think peplum – and not from your 80′s nightmares. think peplum like this stripe ruffle peplum blouse, with yellow, blue and white vertical stripes featuring large plaid ruffle details down the front, long sleeves with puffed shoulders and a frilled peplum. this shirt is a non-scary way to wear peplum. no sequins no overbearing ruffles. peplum just right – and it can’t any righter at $44 marked down 69% from $141! as i gear up to shop it up for something swagged out to wear the the kohl’s rock and republic show – i’m def. thinking all black – black pants (hmmm, leather?) black patent heels and a black sheer top with a black bra? – i can’t help but to be excited about returning to n.y. to cover the kohl’s rock and republic runway show happening this friday the 10th. now the six hour plane ride to get to new york – not so much, but when i touch down, it’s on like popcorn.
i’m excited about this launch at kohl’s and the idea that a major, cross-over appeal, chic-urban brand will be available and affordable for the masses. a small portion of the line has already launched and you can check out the preview here, with the full line launching in stores on feburary 15th – how’s that for a late valentine’s day gift? (yep, i’d like to think that rock and republic jeans that fit in all the right places are much more appealing that the box of chocolates that could make them not fit!)
i can’t wait to see this collection in its entirety grace the runway and i’m looking forward to the flowy tops, uniquely stitched denim and sky high heels with the studded accents we all love and can’t get enough of. rock and republic takes urban and gives it [click to continue…]
despite the fact that we west coaster want to believe it’s not winter (i slept with the a.c. on last night) it is indeed winter – a fact that was sealed as i sat in the airport a couple of weeks ago waiting on a canceled and then delayed and then delayed again flight to new york all because of the first snow of the new year. and because it is still cold outside, you’ve got to bundle up with something from your closet that does not give way to the obvious fact that winter just may not be your favorite season – like with say, this very affordable artist statement coat.
picture this – a striking, hooded wrap coat that lets you exhibit your bold fashion sense on your sleeve. with its graphic black prints and mod-inspired shape, it’s no wonder that you’re drawn to this pale grey coat. secured with a neckline snap and framed by a black, faux leather sash, this masterpiece creates a [click to continue…]
Whilst waiting at the bus stop on a cold raining night, minding my own business praying my preferred mode of transport would arrive already, that is when it happened when I spotted the most amazing Afro, atop a picturesque face mounted on a model figure…little did I know I had just been Julia Sarr Jamois.
