It’s here! It’s here! Fashion Week is in full swing with New York wrapping up their festivities and the fashion exposition moving overseas. Catwalk queens and fashionistas have taken over New York, London, and Paris. I get so excited around this time of year. Fashion Week is what dreams are made of. The collections we see on the runway inspire the way we dress, makeup trends, and definitely hair styles. But have you ever noticed the shortage of kinks and curls on the catwalk? It’s not that models with our hair type don’t exist. There’s a different reason altogether. This brings us to our question of the day:
“How is natural hair treated on the runway?”
A few years ago when I first went natural, I thought my bad hair fashion days were over. I figured that if I showed up to a shoot or a show with short natural hair, there’s no way a stylist could mess it up. Well, I was wrong. One particular show put me over the edge. The producers knew that I was natural and seemed [click to continue…]

Hello lovelies. It’s your Fairy Model Mother here broadcasting live from a photo shoot.
Ooo la la.
I get a lot of questions from aspiring models who want to know how to get their foot in the door. Since it’s the beginning of the year and we’re all starting anew, I figured a quick refresher is appropriate. Today’s question comes from kinky girl Jasmine who says:
“I wanted to know in your experience with modeling, what advice can you give for a young woman trying to get in the industry? What should be my first step?”
There’s not an exact science to getting started in this industry. Some models have been scouted in malls while others went to open calls. For me, after years of trying to get into the business, I was finally “discovered” in a coffee shop. It’s all about timing and persistence if you’re really serious about modeling.
First things first. Think about the [click to continue…]

Hello lovelies. Even though we’re a week and a half into it, I still cannot believe that we are in a new year. I don’t know about you, but I try to make reasonable New Year’s resolutions- things that I realistically can accomplish. This is the perfect time for you to set some goals for your modeling career. I get tons of questions from women looking to start or continue in their modeling career and what better time than now to start looking forward to making this new year one of the best. My most common recent question was:
“How can I be a better model in 2012?”
Every model needs to think of herself or himself not just as an artist, but also as a brand. I understand that you want to do what you love to do, but you’ve also got to [click to continue…]

Hello lovelies. It’s time for your weekly dose of sweet modeling advice from your Fairy Model Mother. Today’s letter comes from Adriana who says that she is “constantly stopped by complete strangers” and asked if she models. While she’s always wanted to be on the runway and do print work, Adriana is quite petite.
So here’s the question:
Can a girl who’s only 5’4” be a model?
This is a complex query to answer. Models come in all different shapes and sizes. You’ve got amazon – like bikini models, pretty-as-a- doll beauty models, curvy-and-they-own-it plus size models… the list goes on. Even with all of these options, [click to continue…]

Hello lovelies. It’s officially December and college students are cramming in the last days of the semester. So it’s perfect timing for this question from Jacky shouting out via Harlem. She’s 18 and says that while she dreams of being a model, her mother wants her to finish her collegiate career before embarking on that pursuit. Jacky asks,
“Can I have a successful modeling career while attending college?”
Jacky, I know all too well what you’re going through. Let me tell you a story about a freckled girl with high hopes of being in magazines and walking on runways. [click to continue…]

Hello darlings. It’s your Fairy Model Mother here. Today we’re going to talk about something a little risque. This question will come up in almost every fashion model’s career, so we might as well discuss it now. “Should I pose nude and how does it affect one’s career?”
Before I get down to the nitty-gritty, let me say this: The following words will sound very similar to that sex talk you had with your mother when you were a teen. Like her, I’m not going to say you shouldn’t do it, but I will give you advice to guide your decision.
There are different levels of nude modeling. There’s implied nudity where only [click to continue…]
