KISFORKINKY is looking for an exceptional editorial intern to join our team! Candidate will work directly under the Editor-in-Chief and must be energetic, professional, organized and a multi-tasker. Duties Include

Writing, Editing, On-Set Production assistance (if LA based), web projects including learning to manage social media and general office tasks.

Though this internship is unpaid, you will learn how to create and grow your own blog and brand. You may also be invited to attend formal and informal events including runway shows, PR events and social parties, and much more. This internship may possibly include up to three days of travel within the U.S.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should have strong writing skills, ONLINE writing experience, and a true interest in natural hair blogging with a strong penchant for online shopping. You should be able to think quick on your feet, write engaging copy and come up with unique and fun ideas and be able to execute them quickly. The ideal candidate must also be based in the United States, self motivated, yet able to follow directions.

Must be at least 20 years old
Able to meet deadlines
Must have access to own working personal computer, the internet and smart phone with ability to text
Commit to 3 days/12 hrs a week between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays and be able to work remotely (virtually) as well as come into the office up to twice a week (if Los Angeles based)

There are times when you need a hair product to work it’s magic on the outside. You know, hang out on the cuticle like a club bouncer keeping the riff raff from slipping past the velvet rope. Then there are times when you need the product to stop playing games and get it in. With a huge dose of coconut, that’s exactly what this mix does.

Gather these ingredients and lehgo!

Triple Phat Coconut Custard Hair Masque

4 oz pure coconut cream; uber fat softens, lauric acid provides anti-microbial action.
1 oz unrefined coconut oil; penetrates the hair shaft to condition and strengthen.
1 oz goat’s milk; emollient, naturally contains capric-capryllic triglyceride (slows moisture loss).
1 tbs black strap molasses; humectant that is high in sulphur, iron and minerals and anti-fungal; contains panthenol which can improve elasticity.

Mix all ingredients to a creamy consistency in a bowl. I often make a large batch of this recipe and store in a jar (refrigerated). Apply the mix liberally to the full length of your tresses, or feel free to add this mix to a bargain brand condish to amp its performance. Leave the masque on for 20 minutes. Rinse well, style as usual, and thank me later.

“Dear Lola, I don’t need your advice. I just need to vent. I am so sick and tired of my cousin, Kris (names changed), and her “good” hair. Before you get rowdy about my choice of words, let me explain. Kris’s hair is just as nappy as my own hair. However, I call it “good” because it seems unstoppable. And she doesn’t deserve it. I’ll get to that in a minute.

We both big chopped at the same time, but Kris had a Big @$$ ‘Fro in a matter of months, while I was trying to catch up with my Teenie Weenie ‘Fro that refused to grow. Then Kris dyed her hair Rihanna Red. Well the dye damaged her hair and it began to break off. Kris cut off the damaged areas and shaved it into a Frohawk. That style grew out like that (snaps fingers)! Then she started straightening her hair all the time and ended up with a lot of heat damage and had to chop again.

While Kris was busy with all this, I had been doing the most for my hair. I have tried more products than I want to admit, and lots of the techniques that everyone is talking about, but it all seems like a waste. I know my hair is growing but I don’t know why I’m not retaining.

Meanwhile, Kris abuses her hair on the daily, and it grows like a weed. Family or not, she’s a be-yatch. She dogs out everyone she thinks has a jacked up style, busted weave, or crispy ends. Her hair is usually on point, but that doesn’t give her the right to judge everyone else. Someone as nasty as she is doesn’t deserve to have fast growing hair. Again, I’m not asking for advice. I know I need to get over it. I do feel better saying how I feel out loud.” – Good Girl With Bad Hair

Dearest Good Girl With Bad Hair,

You are not alone — there are many ‘a chick that will sell their mama’s sofa to have hair that grows to great lengths and at a rapid pace. You are not seeking my advice, but I am going to give you a little tough love. This is about more than hair – this is about the need to measure your own progress based on that of someone else. We could just as easily be talking about weight loss, career, relationships, shoes, and a host of other ways we define success and stature.

To all of that, I simply say “Do you.” Trying to do someone else will get you absolutely no where. Let’s start the year off with a new attitude, and recognize that self-value doesn’t have ish to do with anyone else except for self. Leave that Keeping Up With the Joneses attitude in 2011 along with Uggs, bandage dresses, camel toe inducing leggings and everything else that’s played out and tired. Besides, you already know what you need to do – get over it, babes.

Black Lady (When Good Hair Happens to Bad People and I Could Care Less Cocktail)

Ingredients
1 teaspoon Brandy
2-1/2 oz Grand Marnier
1 oz Kahlua Coffee Liqueur

Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a Brandy or cocktail glass. Garnish with a sprig of mint (optional).

If it’s not obvious already, around here, we can’t get enough to wax fabric. If you’ve been following along, Ciaa has already began to break down the ins and outs of the various types of African fabrics (with much more to come!). I continue to be a big fan of Batik so I just had to add my two cents about my love of this waxed-out magical variety in fabric.

Since the runway shows last fall, the spring and summer trends are starting to filter their way in trend reports all over the web. As one of the key ‘trends’ to be picked up by the fash pack, Batik is considered ‘afro-centric’, though I’m uneasy with the term afro-centric and can’t help but feel the fashion industry is replicating a style that African designers have been doing for years. However, if it does nothing but shed light on the versatility of Batik and African print it could possibly be a good thing.

Burberry sent some stunning Batik down the runway for their SS2012 collection, and more affordable but no less fly brands such as Boxing Kitten have pioneered many a round-the-way Batik “poster girls” with Solange being at the head of the pack. A fan of both Burberry and Boxing Kitten, she kills it with her own eclectic spin on top of pieces that already make a statement.

Hello lovelies. Even though we’re a week and a half into it, I still cannot believe that we are in a new year. I don’t know about you, but I try to make reasonable New Year’s resolutions- things that I realistically can accomplish. This is the perfect time for you to set some goals for your modeling career. I get tons of questions from women looking to start or continue in their modeling career and what better time than now to start looking forward to making this new year one of the best. My most common recent question was:

“How can I be a better model in 2012?”

Every model needs to think of herself or himself not just as an artist, but also as a brand. I understand that you want to do what you love to do, but you’ve also got to strategize. Get a piece of paper and write down your good qualities. What makes you a great model and an individual? Then think about your shortcomings. What are a few things you need to work on?

Nobody’s perfect and there’s always room for improvement. Be honest with yourself. Next, I’d like you to write down your goals for this year along with a date you’d like to accomplish them by. Now you’ve got the beginnings of a plan.

Whether you’re signed to an agency, work independently, or are still looking for representation, there are always things you can do to get better at your craft. Some of these might sound a little funny, but you’ve just got to try.

Perfect Your Look- You can’t decide on if you want to cut your hair or dye it. You aren’t sure if you want to be feminine and whimsical or tough and androgynous. Find a look that fits you and stick with it. Whatever you do, don’t fake the funk. Clients are going to dress you up however they want, but you want to give them something to work with. In the end, you’ve got to own your look and really feel it.
Practice Poses and Runway Walk- Yes, I’m asking you to practice in the mirror. You’ve got to know your best angles and body positions for photo shoots. Besides, you don’t want to get in front of a photographer and look all awkward. Practicing your walk never gets old. Try a standard walk with no frills, then a high-energy fierce walk, and finally a fun, bubbly walk. These will come in handy for upcoming runway castings and meeting agents.
Go to Open Calls- I know they can be torturous, but they’re also helpful. Although quick and painful, these open calls can give you the feedback you need to be better. The agents may say you’re too short, too commercial, or too whatever, but at least you know what you need to work on and what agency isn’t a good fit for you.
Do Test Shoots – What a great way to get back in the swing of things if you’re a little rusty. You can work out those poses you’ve been practicing and maybe get new pics for your portfolio. Try to do free shoots and maybe work with up-and-coming photographers.
Find a Mentor- The world of modeling is cut throat and can get lonely. Look for someone to guide you on your journey like a current or former model, casting director, stylist, or even a photographer. A mentor will encourage you to keep fighting when times get rough. They’ll also be able to give you great advice and maybe even hook you up with jobs.
Stay Healthy – It’s easier said than done. There may be pressure to be a certain weight and build. Sometimes stress will prevent you from taking care of your body. Next thing you know, your hair is thinning and your face is breaking out. This is all realistic. You’ve got to make a conscious effort to take care of your health by eating right, exercising, and feeding your soul.

Are you ready to conquer the world? I sure hope so. Becoming a better model is all about believing that you can do it. Take care of yourself on the inside and that beauty will radiate on the outside.

“I’m 4.5 months pregnant and my hair is looking fuller & thicker than ever (thanks to prenatal vitamins) and also growing faster than I can handle. Do you have any advice on how to care for hair during pregnancy, and low maintenance natural styling tips for pregnant ladies with waning energy? I cannot keep rocking this sad bun and it’s even sadder (but very long) alternate the pony tail.” – Traci

First of all, congrats on the pregnancy! It’s a wonderful experience that a woman will never fully understand unless she’s been there.

As for myself, well… I’ve been there! TWICE as I’m currently going through my second pregnancy (that’s me in the photo above). I know first hand that with dragging energy and a growing belly, it becomes increasingly difficult to carve out the time for higher maintenance hair care and styling so I have a few tips for you that you may find helpful.

My dish on natural hair care/maintenance during pregnancy:

DO NOTHING.

I believe the BEST way to care for hair during pregnancy is, well, NOT TO. Seriously! Have someone you trust (sister, friend, stylist) to wash and style your hair on a schedule that works for you.

SIT, SIT, SIT, and SIT some more.

Doing your hair from a chair for the most part will put less stress on your body. Deep condition on dry hair before you shampoo, and use a heat cap if you don’t want to move around to get your body heat going. Using a water bottle, dampen your scalp and strands, then apply your shampoo – no need to have your hair soaking wet for the shampoo to do its job. For rinsing you can have an assistant (like your s/o) to rinse your hair over the sink or tub for you, or you can hop in the shower to get the fastest rinse. Since you DC’d beforehand, throw on your rinse out conditioner and work it through, then rinse it out. Everything else, leave-in/sealer/styler, can be done sitting down.

My dish on LOW maintenance hairstyling:

As far as low maintenance hairstyles, it’s really a personal choice but these are some of my top suggestions for you.

Weave or extensions. Just make sure you are properly caring for the hair underneath.

Your “Go-To” style. You know, the one you can create and maintain in your sleep? Yeah, that one. My go-to style is the curly afro aka wash-n-go (pictured) because I only style it one day, and then it lasts until I’m ready to wash again. Twist-outs are not as low maintenance for me because my hair isn’t long enough to go without re-twisting every night. That is NOT the business for a working pregnant woman watching after a toddler let me tell you! When I’m ready to sleep, I just want to CRASH!

Two strand twists or braids. You can wear/style them for several days, then take them down for a when you’re ready for a change. You can also rock the twists by wearing them under a fly head wrap.

That bun and ponytail of yours. Don’t underestimate those wonder-styles! Try moving that bun from the back center of your head to right atop your head, and you have an uber chic ‘do! Try putting your ponytail super low and to one side, then wet or dry twisting it on rods, and you’ll be one hot mama!

Two strand flat twists. Adding these to any hairstyle will add some flair – it’s fast and easy to do.

“La French braid.” It is a quick and simple style that will rival your bun and ponytail because it has texture to it.

i’ve long left my paddle brush sitting in the back of my cabinets waiting to be used. as much as i used to love to use it, i don’t use it regularly anymore seeing as my shower comb does everything i need it to do. maybe i’ll have a sacramental hair brushing session just for the heck of it this month, or maybe not.

either way, my interest was piqued when i saw this new goody quik style paddle brush that will be for sale in march at your local drugstore for $11.99.

this brush is supposed to decrease your drying time. why? because it’s filled with microfiber antimicrobial bristles that soak up water like little sponges. okay, that’s just a wee bit gimmicky to me because everyone knows that you can use a microfiber towel to dry your hair and get more water out of your strands than a regular towel but i guess goody thought by putting in microfiber soft bristles it’s a two-in-one step that replaces the towel. i guess one could see that…

i’m not sure that this goody quik style paddle brush is going to be a win for kinky bellas like me, but for you ladies with type 3 curls and looser, you may just want to look into this brush to see if it fits seamlessly into your hair washing routine and helps to speed up your styling sessions buy cutting down on your drying time.

when i get out of the shower and when i was using my paddle brush regular, i would take down my sections, one at at time, brush through them once more and then apply my hair products to seal in moisture. now, my routine has been tweaked a bit and i’m experimenting with applying my hair products to my half dry hair vs. soaking wet. and i have to say i’m really liking it so far. it would be nice if in that one swipe to do a final detangle before applying my product that more water was removed from my strands. hmmm…

i can’t wait to see how this one plays out. we may all be a bit surprised. or maybe not.
