not everyone is a DIYer of their own hair. i completely get and respect that. i used to go to the salon four times a year – twice for color and twice for trims – 1st and 2nd half of the year. now i go twice year for trims and that’s it. when it all boils down, i don’t care for stylists to touch my hair because i’m neurotic and would walk out with nubs for fingers – after biting through my nails and then my flesh, gristle and bone from nervousness – if i did.
when i got my hair colored at aveda a few years ago, i walked out with wet hair and hair loaded with conditioner. i was not about to have my hair combed in the salon, and though the salon was full of natural stylists, i just couldn’t – i told you i was neurotic. hey, we all have our thing. though i did challenge myself to get my hair done at a natural hair salon before summer next year. we’ll see.
but if you are nothing like me and love going to the salon and want to be sure the “natural” stylist is going to treat your hair well, here are a few tips you should follow to be sure you get the best salon experience possible. make sure you approach your salon hair care like you approach the diligence you use when picking out a staple wardrobe piece: with time and patience. that way you and your stylist will be in a happy relationship for years to come.
in ten+ easy steps you can get your “hair did” and be happy for it…

a very kinky girl with waist length hair, miss lala has reaped the rewards of healthy hair care. i sat down to talk with her for the type 4 hair series about her healthy hair routine to get the scoop on what she does to keep her tresses golden. yes, she wears weaves and wigs sometimes and yes, she gets tired of her hair just like the rest of us and no, she’s not taking magic hair growth pills – actually her hair grows slower than you’d expect, miss la la is just putting plain ‘ole common sense hair rules into practice and is patiently reaping the rewards all the way to waist length and beyond.
after picking her brain for an hour about her hair, i found her gentle spirit and willingness to share extra refreshing.

we all have something that we do to our hair that works almost each and every time. it’s that something or product that makes our hair outstanding and noticeable. when we do that certain thing, our hair is noticed and complimented all day long? so what’s yours?
since i asked, i might as well give up my goods first. my holy grail, [click to continue…]

this “hair band” hair style is so simple and so chic. the idea crossed my mind to do this to my hair a few years back but when i tried it, it didn’t look this cute! i’m going to be trying this “hair band” style again soon.
this is a great hair style for curls and kinks of all textures, but for those of us who don’t have super wake up and go hair, this is even more of a style you can rock when you are in desperate need of a quick hair do. [click to continue…]

last week beyonce showed up to surprise her mom on the set of the today show and it was refreshing to see the singer with her natural hair out.
the internet is usually buzzing when beyonce walks onto the red carpet or anywhere else with one of her signature lace wigs. celebrity bloggers go crazy if a piece of lace is showing or her wig is ill fitted and even if her style looks great, someone always finds a way to pick apart the star.
