a reader (not pictured) asks: I REALLY love your blog first of all <3 <3. I found it not to long ago i think on twitter. I am Hispanic and Native American. I was wondering if the posts you make about hair are only for African American woman and men? Do you think it would be safe if i tried some of the products and techniques you have tried and reviewed?

Cramped in the 1/2 bath in my house, I looked in the mirror and said to my reflection “No”. It wasn’t a shout or overly emphatic. Just a simple…no. That no caused me to take the “kiddie perm” in my hand and throw away that brown stick that you use to mix up your relaxers in the trash. I covered up the plastic tube of white cream and put it in the fridge….”just in case I change my mind” I thought to myself. hmmm, what do you mean by normal? like a pig flying? i’ve seen a pig fly before, obama was elected, right? and you know, my dog is also pyschic, but i’m pretty sure you didn’t mean abnormally, normal, huh?

well, if you didn’t, then yes, having three textures of hair in your head is more than normal. as is having more or less.

you see those curls? they are fresh out of the shower, no product applied curls.*

i love ‘em, but let me tell you a little something, let me share a little not so much of a secret (or big deal for that matter) with you: my hair looses it’s curls at the drop of a dime.

yes, it does, darlings.

i can wash my hair, my spirals popping and bouncing, but once i pass a hand, comb or any other foreign object over them, my hair does what it does best. it poofs. be gone gina. martin, anyone?

many a natural have fallen victim to heat damage. usually it happens in a small section of your head where you unfortunately discover a section of non-reverting hair, usually right after a good press or blow out. but that’s what happens to us when we get, shall i say, lucky?

otise’s (pronounced o-teese) story is a bit different and one i’d say is probably the most common with naturals who like to press and wear their hair straight on a daily bases. having been natural since 03, she’s been pressing her hair for years. unfortunately all of that pressing left her with hair that wouldn’t revert and tons of contrasting textured new growth.
