ebony is a natural and she is truly proud. learning to love her natural hair after recovering from a few stumbling blocks; she went back to relaxing for a while when she couldn’t figure out exactly how to care for her natural hair, she feels like she finally gets it and that being natural is part of who she is and identifies with as a curly woman. she chops it up to show off her kinky side and share what makes her a kinky girl and how she rocks her natural so…naturally.
“Relaxing my hair was not an option anymore.
In the grand scheme of things, it just didn’t make sense.”
what’s the best part about having textured hair?
my favorite thing about having textured hair is that i can do whatever the heck i want with it. i can wear it kinky/curly if i want, twisted, straightened, etc. i absolutely love the versatility and the fact that if it rains i don’t really care. lol!
being a kinky and curly girl can be much more fun than a lot of people still believe. what influenced you to go au natural and step into the shoes of a curly woman? [click to continue…]

my fiance is perfect in every way except one. he hates my natural hair. my hair is very kinky and coarse and i’m a type 4zzzzz. no curl pattern, just a fluffy cloud of hair. i love my hair but i think he’s embarrassed by it. when we are out, if there happens to be another natural around that has even type 4a hair he’ll make a comment about how pretty her hair is with “the little waves.” i’m convinced he has “texture” issues. (he’s a type 3) he’s never told me he likes my hair but he has said that it makes him a little uncomfortable because i look like a boy (i wear my hair in a twa because i look best with short hair) and that he wants me to at least texlax my hair. i want to wear my hair as i always do, just out in my fro with maybe a little flower clipped in for the wedding but i’m afraid it might turn him off. what do you think i should do? |
i’m sorry you are going through this, chica. i can imagine that this is difficult to deal with seeing as you are in love with this man and want to devote your life to him.
but let me say this first – your fiance is being an absolute jerk when it comes to your hair. there is no way in the world a man that is ready to devote his life to you should be saying such ingnoramus things and acting this way towards you. but i’m going to give him a pass. one, because [click to continue…]

which chick is flyer? the one on the left or right? if you answered both, then you get a gold star for the day.
why are both equally fly and beautiful? it is because the fly is not limited by texture and this photo is wonderful and tangible proof of how curl-less girls and curly girls can co-exist side-by-side in the fly – exuding their boss and their style – one never to triumph the other by texture default. kelly is a kinky haired natural that holds no punches. her hair is kinky and her styling skills are off the charts. currently enrolled in aveda to take her natural hair skills up a notch, we talked for two hours for her type 4 feature about all kinds of random things including philly move members, naps and “fros on the fourth” – kelly was one of the inspirational naturals behind “fros on the fourth” and designed the logo that spread in the natural community like a virus. i can’t wait to see how her skills skyrocket after school and she shares with the world her professional natural hair game which i’m sure will be a force to be reckoned with.
what year did you start going natural? [click to continue…]

i don’t think it’s a big secret that hair textures and the way that some people perceive them walk a fine line of discrimination. i have my own historical take on why this is and though i don’t want to go into a dissertation in this post, i’m, sadly, not surprised.
while browsing the tube, i ran across this video where bronzqt talks about how a salon owner she met courted her for her patronage though the owner charges more money to do kinky hair versus “biracial hair.”
hmmm…i see a problem here. first up [click to continue…]
