MOISTURE

one of my favorite blog posts and a post that i really enjoyed putting together was, “How To Moisturize Your Curly Natural Hair.” to this day, it is one of the most popular posts on the blog. i can understand that as moisturizing my hair used to be a task which was what inspired me to write it in the first place. i originally wrote it in 2010 and it outlined in brief detail what i recommended to other kurly and kinky women do to get a grip on their hair dryness. i shared all of the things that worked for me – the girl with hair ten times dryer than the sahara desert.

but then i thought, this is supposed to be the last year we are all alive – if you believe in all that armageddon stuff – and i wouldn’t want my fellow kinky girls to go out with dry crunchy hair – no, neva dat, so i needed to up the ante. it’s a new year (the last days depending on who you ask) and i’ve learned a bit more since writing that piece so i’ve been working on [click to continue…]

last month, i had the unfortunate experience of falling asleep and not wrapping my hair which i also lamented about on facebook. like the dry heat gods always do, they wreaked havoc on my tresses leaving me with a little more than my share of mats to deal with.

my hair is very, very kinky, and i’m often sent emails from readers who don’t seem to think this is the case. these emails used to baffle me, but now i get it. you always see photos of my hair in a supple state; plump and gorged with water and sealed with oils which in turn makes it seem that my hair is not kinky. but i’m a very kinky girl.

okay, okay, looking at the photo above, i could see why one could possibly think that, but this blog is no sham, it’s called KISFORKINKY for a reason, and that reason being is that i’m a kinky girl and i share my tips with other kinky and curly girls to help them with managing their hair. and speaking of managing your hair, i say all of that to say that if you have not tried qhemets biologics burdock root butter cream for your kinky or curly hair, you my dears, are missing out.

so back to my dry hair story. [click to continue…]

“my hair is often dry when i wake up in the morning. well, actually everything on me is dry. i have excema and very dry skin and my hair is dry but gets really dry at night. is there any way i can combat this? – b (not pictured)

dry hair or skin is not the bee’s knees. it’s frustrating and inconvenient to say the least. we have to slather on products just to get our skin to behave and if we rush through this process, hours later we begin the reap the rewards of hasty work with signs of ashyness and or dry hair.

if you live in a dry state with little to no daily humidity like i do, or have harsh, cold and dry winters, then you can combat dryness with a little help from our friend, water, in its humidified aka condensed form. by combining water, a lavender-based essential oil mix and rose water, you can go to bed relaxed and wake up, steamy and with supple natural hair. sounds like a plan to me. ;)

b, to start combating your dry hair at night, first i highly suggest that you pick up this nifty, pink [click to continue…]

maria (not pictured) asks:

I’ve been natural almost 8 months now. At first, I had a lot of visible growth, but ever since about month 5 I haven’t really noticed any growth. I try to keep my regimen simple, I started using coconut oil and olive oil to seal in moisture after wetting my hair in the mornings, and it seemed to be doing alright. I sleep with a satin bonnet, I don’t use any heat at all, and I use shampoo about every 2 weeks.

Then I got an opportunity to study abroad in China for 3 months at the beginning of March, and so in anticipation I decided to buy Curl Enhancing Smoothie to put on my hair to seal in moisture rather than the olive oil for while I was in China.

I have been in China for about a month now, and I have seen NOOOOO growth. In fact, yesterday 2 different people asked me if I had gotten a HAIRCUT. Honestly, I can tell when my hair is DRY DRY, but during the day a lot of times, my hair won’t be soft, but it will still feel slightly greasy/oily when I put my hand in it, and I don’t know if that is normal and I can’t tell how dry or oily my hair really is. I have been using the same conditioner and shampoo as usual while here in China; I am convinced it is this cream. I think my hair is a mixture of both 4a and 4b (but honestly it is hard for me to tell, I’m still way too much of a newbie at all of this).

Can you help?

maria, it does not sound like your problem is the curl enhancing smoothie per se, if you are not seeing growth, it seems that i’m missing something – are you brushing your hair dry? detangling harshly in the shower? it would seem that you may be breaking your hair but where i can’t tell. don’t talk about me, but i just started using shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie back in november of last year. can you say late to the party?

i don’t live in the most diverse part of la so much to my dismay, shea moisture just came to my local target recently – as in this month. okay, yeah i could have ordered online, but i didn’t. instead, i used shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie for the first time when i went to visit my family at thanksgiving and took a scoop from my sister’s jar. it was love at first application and it’s back to being love again! AMAZING STUFF! [click to continue…]

on my “to try” list, and high up on it i might add are ouidad products. anything that’s hard to pronounce and comes in a pretty bottle is intriguing to me – hey, we all have our vices. okay, i’m just being tongue and cheek. my true reason in trying a product is based on brand quality and reputation as well as ingredients.

recently, i ran across ouidad’s moisture lock™ leave-in conditioner that somehow slipped off of my product radar.

let me tell you something right now, [click to continue…]
