MOISTURIZING

one of my favorite blog posts and a post that i really enjoyed putting together was, “How To Moisturize Your Curly Natural Hair.” to this day, it is one of the most popular posts on the blog. i can understand that as moisturizing my hair used to be a task which was what inspired me to write it in the first place. i originally wrote it in 2010 and it outlined in brief detail what i recommended to other kurly and kinky women do to get a grip on their hair dryness. i shared all of the things that worked for me – the girl with hair ten times dryer than the sahara desert.

but then i thought, this is supposed to be the last year we are all alive – if you believe in all that armageddon stuff – and i wouldn’t want my fellow kinky girls to go out with dry crunchy hair – no, neva dat, so i needed to up the ante. it’s a new year (the last days depending on who you ask) and i’ve learned a bit more since writing that piece so i’ve been working on [click to continue…]

I just know that your tresses are moist and buttery soft from the Triple Phat Coconut Custard Hair Masque I hit you with last time, yes? Now it’s time to lock it all in with this decadent and creamy Whipped Key Lime Coconut Butter. This mix takes a little more elbow grease then your average recipe, but trust that it’s well worth it.

To make this super delish and great smelling butter for your natural hair – we’re talking margarita hair party for your Bermuda mama style, mix the following lush ingredients and let’s get it (click the links to shop ‘em)! [click to continue…]

“What’s your advice on getting my hair to stop breaking…I wash with sulfate free shampoo once a month and co wash once a week. I use coconut oil, lacio lacio leave-in and roller set and flat iron once a week – I pass over the hair one time to make it straight…I do a protein aphogee or redken extreme protein treatment – I just trimmed all of my ends….and I still loose 10-15 hairs everyday :( in your experience is there anything I should do to stop breakage in its tracks…?” – elaina (not pictured)

elaina, elaina, where do i start? first i’m going to ask that you please step away from what you are doing right now and let’s examine what’s going on. you have a whole lot happening in your routine and it’s very evident to me why your hair is breaking. you are committing one of the cardinal natural hair sins – fighting with your hair and not listening to it – yes it talks :). don’t think so? well, let’s examine what’s going on in your routine so we can pinpoint this breakage. refresher sprays can get expensive and when you turn the bottle over just to see ingredients that you could have thrown together in your own kitchen, it’s a bit of a bummer!

don’t get me wrong, i even have some favorite refresher sprays that i purchase, but if you want something quick, cheap and that smells heavenly, then try this simple rose and oil daily hair refresher spray that not only smells, well, heavenly, but cost pennies.

maria (not pictured) asks:

I’ve been natural almost 8 months now. At first, I had a lot of visible growth, but ever since about month 5 I haven’t really noticed any growth. I try to keep my regimen simple, I started using coconut oil and olive oil to seal in moisture after wetting my hair in the mornings, and it seemed to be doing alright. I sleep with a satin bonnet, I don’t use any heat at all, and I use shampoo about every 2 weeks.

Then I got an opportunity to study abroad in China for 3 months at the beginning of March, and so in anticipation I decided to buy Curl Enhancing Smoothie to put on my hair to seal in moisture rather than the olive oil for while I was in China.

I have been in China for about a month now, and I have seen NOOOOO growth. In fact, yesterday 2 different people asked me if I had gotten a HAIRCUT. Honestly, I can tell when my hair is DRY DRY, but during the day a lot of times, my hair won’t be soft, but it will still feel slightly greasy/oily when I put my hand in it, and I don’t know if that is normal and I can’t tell how dry or oily my hair really is. I have been using the same conditioner and shampoo as usual while here in China; I am convinced it is this cream. I think my hair is a mixture of both 4a and 4b (but honestly it is hard for me to tell, I’m still way too much of a newbie at all of this).

Can you help?

maria, it does not sound like your problem is the curl enhancing smoothie per se, if you are not seeing growth, it seems that i’m missing something – are you brushing your hair dry? detangling harshly in the shower? it would seem that you may be breaking your hair but where i can’t tell. it’s been a minute since i’ve ventured outside of the conditioner circle that i cherise – aussi moist and garnier moisture works – but while in whole paycheck the other night (whole foods for all of you who aren’t on) i saw a bottle of conditioner that i’d noticed a while back but put back down in lieu of another product.

now mind you, i had and still have a great, big, bottle of garnier sitting in my shower but tyrona biggums got the best of me and my inner pj made me buy this conditioner.

at first squeeze, i realized [click to continue…]
