NATURAL HAIR

“My animals are my two bangle mix kitties but they fetch like dogs and steal my socks!” Kris of The Kris Bliss says as we talk on the phone. She says this with a laugh as we settle in for our interview. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Kris received two degrees; one in songwriting and one in music business. “I love going to concerts,” she says, “And watching old school movies like the Five Heart Beats and the Temptations.” As for her natural hair, she has no regrets or apologies to dish out. “I saw it on TV of all places and that was that!”

KISFORKINKY: what brought you the world of natural? what’s your story?
KRIS: when i was in 10th grade, i saw all of these girls on t.v. with big natural hair. from that, i decided that i wanted to go natural so i told my mom and of course she tried to talk me out of it. this is coming from a woman who didn’t get her first perm until she was [click to continue…]

“Cuz baby whether you’re high or low. Whether you’re high or low… you gotta tip on the tightrope.”

When I’m getting ready to go out or I have an audition, I listen to music to get me hype. I don’t know about you, but a certain song always gets me going. For instance, when KISFORKINKY hosted the meet up a few weeks ago I asked the dj to play Vivrant Thing before I got on stage to speak. That jam and I have been together since college, and we’re still going strong. Now that’s my personal theme song, but my hair has a song all on her own.

I didn’t discover my hair melody until [click to continue…]

Freelance make-up artist Sisi Nike is the blogger behind My Modest Mouth. Through her blog, Sisi takes us into a journey about her natural hair, beauty and style and how she feels about being an African woman with natural hair.

Why and when did you make the decision to go natural?

Well I originally did the big chop back in May of 2007 but I put a texturizer in my hair. I went back to perms after I ruined the texture of my hair by putting a hot comb to it a year later. I decided to start all over again in the summer of 2010 when I became sick and tired of maintaining my short “Rihanna/Halle Berry” cut while working out. It became far too annoying to maintain a style like that and sweating all the time, so I decided to grow out my hair. I wanted to [click to continue…]

Salut Bellas! I hope you had a wonderful holiday and you are ready for 2012. I am very excited to see what this year has to offer and as usual, I am back to blogging about the latest and freshest in African fashions and lifestyle. Which leads me to… A few weeks ago while doing my usual rounds on the net I came upon this article by the Guardian about Nigerian women and their struggles with their natural hair. This article really hit home because although this article only talks about Nigerian women this is a reality in almost all parts of Africa. Even though I’m from Mali, I could totally relate and it made me think about our struggles as black women with our natural hair that transcends continents far outside of the West. (You can read the full article here.)

“In a world of dramatically contrasting poverty and wealth, it’s a rare common denominator: the one social status symbol of choice that cuts across Nigeria’s vast class and culture groups is hair extensions. And the longer and straighter, the better.

They are so popular that few women in the buzzing commercial cities of Africa’s most populous nation openly wear their hair in its natural, curly state. “We’re never taught to look after our natural hair, and it’s something you’re supposed to learn as a child, the way you learn to tie your shoelaces,” said Yemi Akinrinade, 28, who struggled to persuade her own hairstylist not to straighten her curls on her wedding day.”

This article really hits home for me. When I finished reading I felt like the writer was  [click to continue…]

“Can’t you see
I’m talking about eternity
Tell me would you care to be
My lady, my baby”

in hinduisum, the lotus represents beauty, fertility, prosperity, eternity and eternal youth. we all know that we can’t live forever, and that in time all physical beauty will fade, but the idea of forever makes many swoon at the possibility.

in lotus flower bomb, wale is enamored by bre who, on the other hand, is annoyed by his persistence. decked in a blazer and a fitted dress, she is working it as the manager (owner?) of her own shop and plays a mash up between annoyed and coy as she buffers wale’s attempts at breaking down her wall.
