Everything sounds better in French!

one of the best things about speaking a few languages is my ability to sneak my perceived linguistic naïveté past people. this skill comes in hand a lot and especially when i used to get my hair braided. i’d go to the african braid shops with the braiders from senegal or the congo and listen in as they mixed french and wolof together (the senegalese girls) and talked about my hair. i never heard something i didn’t like but on one trip to the shop they mentioned mixing my hair that i’d brought in with another color that they had on hand perhaps with a similar dark brown. why they were going to do this, i don’t know and it didn’t matter. “i’d prefer you not do that.” ["je préfère que vous n'avez pas le faire"] i told them, not even looking up from the magazine i was reading. you could hear crickets.

sounded so much better to say it in french than english and like my sneaky french, this umbrella is too naughty to not notice.

“Merde! Il Pleu!”

okay, so i don’t technically condone walking around with slurs on your umbrella, but “Sh*t! It’s raining!” is something that we’ve all said at one time in our lives before and it sounds better to say it in french anyway. that way you can say something like, [click to continue…]
