how do i use heat protectants to safely heat style?

Monday, June 14th, 2010

heat protectants are just as their name implies – protectants from heat.

if you are use any heat styling tools on your hair – yes, that includes blow dryers (see blow out tips), then you should also be using heat protectants to prevent heat damage (otise talks about her heat damage).

sedu pro ionic ceramic tourmaline straightener review

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

(5/5)

i have owned my sedu flatiron since 2005. i’m five years in and i still love it.

i purchased my sedu iron because i was searching for a way to straighten my hair and not burn it out with an unprotected, uncoated, unevenly heated, traditional, “gold ‘n hot”, flatiron.

i remember the first pass through my hair. hair that was not even freshly washed and filled with 4 or 5 day old curly pudding. a-ma-zing! i couldn’t believe it. i’d seen all the reviews but for the sedu online – i remember spending hours reading them and staring at photos – but to actually have it work on my coarse hair was a dream. i mean i was hopeful and *thought* it would, but as a kinky girl, you just never know.

my hair story: the kinks, the coils and relaxers!

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

myhairmy hair is kinky and curly.

it’s hair that has been called: bad, nappy, good, curly, kinky, and a variety of things in between.

i simply call it my hair.

my hair is also colored. i had it colored at an aveda concept salon in feb 09. the colors are copper, blonde and chocolate brown; the chocolate is in the back, while the front is more copper with blonde highlights.

my regimen is very simple {i’m a keep it simple (and fast!) kinda gal}:

  1. co-wash once a week; sometimes twice a week, or even sometimes every other week – depending on workout schedule
  2. use either carefree gold, glycerin, hawaiian 14-in-1 and or a combo to seal in moisture.
  3. top off with olive oil or coconut oil
  4. add a touch of gel for frizzies (optional)
  5. twist and sleep or fluff and go
  6. clarify once a month with acv (apple cider vinegar)

that’s it. sometimes it changes, but more often than not, it does not.

i like to try a lot of products though (so sometimes #2 and #4 change up), a different condish here and there, gels, etc., so i’ll be doing plenty of reviews.

my hair back story

like most little black girls, i was natural up until my teens. it was actually the year i was to turn 13 (so i was 12) that i got my first relaxer.

a good flatiron?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

like most naturals, my straightening tools are just as important as my maintenance tools. straightening natural hair can have it’s challenges, but it can also be a breeze. luckily, i’ve passed the “challenging” phase of my hair care routine and it’s all a breeze now, litterally.

one of the things i MUST do is straighten my hair while it’s cool. so i always sit on the floor in front of my mirror with the fan blowing near me. not directly on me, but close enough to keep my scalp dry. i’ll easily sweat out a section i’d just finished if i’m not careful and this leaves me fustrated because i don’t want to have to do the section over again!

i use a sedu as my straightner + heat protectant, which for me is a must. not using a heat protectant gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it. *shudders*
