carol’s daughter is keeping up not only with just curls but with the natural hair scene by creating a new site…a new “movement to natural” with their new transitioning movement website.

i think their new website is a great step in helping women transition to natural and also a great way to sell their products on a larger scale – we can’t forget the big business aspect here. i plan to make sure i bookmark the site and keep up with what’s going on over on the new sister site to natural hair care.

i’ve fallen back in love with carol’s daughter from their macadamia collection to the chocolat collection. they are really making some product game changers for their line expansion and i’m happy to see the brand do so well and continue to create beauty products that make women feel good about themselves.

thinking back to when i went natural i cringe at the things i did to my hair and how i took healthy collar bone length hair and fried it, shred it, ripped it and fried it some more to the brink of death. the resources that currently are available now to new naturals and transitioners was not available to me at the time and kisforkinky didn’t exist nor was it on my radar to start this little space on the internet.

during my transition and first year fully natural, i made many a mistake the main one being too much heat. i see this all the time with new transitioners as well – they don’t want that line of demarcation where the new growth meets the relaxed enes so they fry their roots to death to get them to match the rest of their hair. big mistake!

after watching the video below, it made me reflect on my own journey and the mistakes i made. today, i still see a lot of the same mistakes i made being repeated by newbies.

my top 5 newly natural hair mistakes are

1. waiting too long to big chop.

honey, cut it off already or get good trims and keep that stuff braided up especially if you are type 4 because your breakage is going to be serious.

2. too much heat to compensate for the straight ends.

two words – heat damage.

3. going into being natural as if you hair is going to be fab by default.

this was my problem. i thought that just by being natural my hair would thrive and grow long and be this larger than life, extra ordinary fro. long it did grow, but thrive. no so much. i didn’t know what i was doing when it came to care nor did i take the time to really learn what other naturals were doing on top of pressing my hair twice a week. talk about breakage. ouch!

4. not letting go of what you used to look like with a relaxer.

flaming hot unpopular opinion ahead! news flash! you don’t look that naturally – it’s fake; a mirage, a silicone boobie. it’s fake because you had to FORCE your hair to be straight so when you see the real you it’s a shocker. i know it’s a process, but lets work to get over it and move on with your life.

5. obsession with curl pattern.

either you have it or don’t. been there, done that, got the tee shirt. again, we gots to keep it moving and work with you were born with. stop shingling and giving yourself tendinitis and early onset arthritis trying to get your hair that probably has no curl to curl. curls are pretty and so are no curls so let it do what it do.
